Living in Greece

A practical guide to moving, living, working & traveling in Greece, plus musing and misadventures from an American in Athens

Best places to work in Greece 2010

The Great Place to Work Institute Hellas® , in collaboration with ALBA Graduate Business School, published its annual list of Best Workplaces in Greece for 2010 in Sunday’s To Vima.

Great Place to Work® Institute in America, which produces “Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For in the USA,” cooperates with global partners in 37 countries to identify the best companies to work for by assessing work environment and surveying employees from companies that voluntarily submit themselves for evaluation. That means the list is not inclusive of all companies, only those that choose to participate.

Also be aware that the survey can only disclose positive feedback, which means there are undisclosed negative factors.

A newer list is available at, “Best places to work in Greece 2011.”

Best job, best place, best pay?

Searching for the best job or highest salary in Greece is subjective. Finding a good job and negotiating a salary in Greece or any country is dependent on several factors, including the job market, competition amongst qualified candidates, size of company and, more importantly, your level of education, skills, experience, ability to speak several languages, references and timing. In Greece, connections often help.

There isn’t one profession or one company offering the best salary or best working conditions in Greece. If there was, wouldn’t we all work there?

Practical info about working in Greece

Nearly all vacancies ask that candidates have fluency in Greek, fulfill Greek military obligations (if male) and be aged 35 (male) or 30 (female) or younger; multinational companies often prefer Greek citizens with master’s degrees from the UK. Discrimination based on age, gender and nationality is common in Greece and typically goes unpunished, unless a candidate files a complaint with the Greek Ombudsman.

EU citizens from the 28 member states (except Croatia), plus citizens from Iceland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland and Norway, are free to work in Greece without restriction, while non-EU citizens must read “How Americans/non-EU citizens can get a permit to live and work in Greece” to understand how to get a visa and work permit before seeking employment. Non-EU citizens compete with a surplus of highly qualified, multilingual Greek and EU candidates, who can fill these positions with no bureaucracy; and are expected to have working knowledge of local business culture, as explained in “Common myths vs. reality about working in Greece.” Most employers also ask for fluency in Greek, described in “Importance of speaking Greek in Greece.”

Many companies listed below appear to be American companies operating in Greece but are actually privately owned Greek subsidiaries or branches. There are no purely American businesses in Greece because Greek laws conflict with U.S. laws. Also, compiling and updating a list of American franchises and joint ventures in Greece would be a full-time job, with changes occurring daily as the debt crisis, tax hikes and burdensome bureaucracy cause many multinationals to shut down and leave.

Using this list

Company names are in CAPS and contain the link to their home page. If websites only had a Greek version, I provided a translation of contact information in English, in addition to a link to the Career/Job section if they had one. Companies in Greece rarely list an HR contact or have a company directory with email addresses.

Please note that I do not represent the companies listed and cannot assist anyone in finding a job. It is essential to build your own contacts through networking, apply to vacancies and inquire directly if you have questions or concerns.
